The night of August 10, 1942, a convoy of 14 ships including the U.S.S. Ohio, a 10,000 ton oil tanker; escorted by no less than 59 naval vessels including British aircraft carriers Victorious, Eagle, and Indomitable; the battleships Nelson, Rodney, several cruisers, and a ring of destroyers; entered the Mediterranean under cover of darkness, to reinforce the besieged island of Malta. This operation was so important to P.M. Winston Churchill, that he requested daily reports on its progress, while he was meeting with Stalin in Moscow.
Of the original 14 ships, five survived a vicious attack by both Italian and German bombers, submarines, and E-boats (Motor torpedo boats like our PT’s.) to reach Malta.
